Safer Sex: The New Morality The attitudes, thinking, and policies in European countries where the teen pregnancy rates are much lower than those in the United States are examined in this plea for domestic societal change. Research in the Netherlands, France, and Germany found that nonjudgmental attitudes, access to safer sex practices, and comprehensive sex education are the norm. This book looks to European principles and proposes that the United States put aside philosophical and religious differences and work together to protect teens from early, unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. Topics covered include family values, the influence of the media, AIDS and STDs, contraception, abstinence, sex education, abortion, and religion. This book is geared toward teachers, religious leaders, public health officials, medical providers, and parents -- in short, anyone who has respect for teens and their ability, with appropriate and honest guidance, to make responsible decisions.
The American Heritage Dictionary of Indo-European Roots by Calvert Watkins, Fully revised and updated, THE AMERICAN HERITAGE(R) DICTIONARY OF INDO-EUROPEAN ROOTS remains an indispensable resource for anyone interested in the history of English and its place in the Indo-European language family. More than 13,000 words are traced to their origins in Proto-Indo-European, the prehistoric ancestor of English that was spoken before the advent of writing. In Calvert Watkins"s skilled hands, Proto-Indo-European language and society are rendered as alive and compelling as they must have been six thousand years ago. His introductory essay shows how words in an unrecorded ancient language can be reconstructed and offers a wealth of fascinating information about Proto-Indo-European culture. The dictionary that follows contains nearly 1,350 reconstructed roots, plus two dozen new "Language and Culture" notes that explore interesting sidelights to the etymologies presented in many entries.
Proto-Indo-European religion - The existence of similarities among the deities and religious practices of the Indo-European peoples suggests that whatever population they actually formed had some form of polytheistic religion. This hypothetical religion would have been the ancestor of the majority of the polytheistic religions of pre-Christian Europe, of the Dharma Faiths in India, and of Zoroastrianism in Iran. Indo-European studies - Indo-European studies is a field of linguistics, dealing with the Indo-European languages. Its goal is to uncover information about the hypothetical proto-language from which all of these languages are descended, a language of the early Bronze Age dubbed Proto-Indo-European (PIE), and its speakers, the Proto-Indo-Europeans. Indo-European ablaut - In linguistics, the term ablaut (from German ab- in the sense "down, reducing" + Laut "sound") designates a system of vowel gradations in Proto-Indo-European and its far-reaching consequences in all of the modern Indo-European languages. Ablaut can also be called apophony, vowel gradation, or vowel alternation. List of common Indo-European roots - This is the list of most commonly represented Proto-Indo-European roots. Generally, only the most representative sample from each branch of the Indo-European languages is given.
